The Sheldon Residence

I was recently asked by my friend, Keith York at Modern San Diego, to photograph a new listing of his. The Sheldon Residence in Fletcher Hills was coming on the market for the first time. I'd long admired this house so I jumped at the chance.

The Gale and Ruth Sheldon Residence was designed by architect Richard John ‘Dick’ Lareau in 1960-61 (It seems like half of the buildings in San Diego were designed and built in 1960. Must have been a crazy year of construction for this area). Here are some photos of what it looked like shortly after construction.

The original client, Gale Sheldon, was actively involved in the construction of the house. He also took drafting classes.

Sheldon also did the landscape plan, which includes lots of outdoor terraces and intimate spaces.

While the original home was approximately 1,400 sq ft., the later addition nearly doubled the livable space by finishing the lower floor and extending the upper floor.

Still, I prefer the original design, which is more elegant to me.

Much of the furniture, lighting and cabinetry was custom made for the home.
